No ice ,but a lot of big chunks of ice floating around.. People are out fishing. There were about 15 boat trailers parked at Mazurik's.

I remember one yr when it froze solid, they marked the path from Catawba Island to PIB w/old Christmas trees. The locals told me that is common.

One of my sisters collected all our family history she could and found a story in the newspapers of the day, of a second or third cousin that was a nurse and one winter when the lake was frozen an expectant mother on Kellie's needed medical attention.
She and the Dr she worked for, drove his model A across the lake and delivered the baby.
On their return trip, the lake had fogged in and they got lost and crashed through a thin spot and both drowned.

The paper followed the rescue/recovery effort which consisted of men on the ice, around the hole, using grappling hooks to snag the car and using wooden beams to lift it to the surface by hand!

Ive read all of the history of the area and the bad asses of day were the mail carriers.
In the winter they pushed boats with ice skids on the bottoms while on ice and they pushed them (!!), then in open water would row.
They performed many rescues, got lost in many storms etc. etc.
These were big, wooden, heavy boats (18' - 20'?) too.

I want to get back into wreck diving up there too.
Wrecks everywhere.

No doubt.

My patents both grew up on a farm, through the depression.

My dad did 2 yrs in Navy in WW II on a repair ship, in midst of action, to defend his country while mom took care of my 2 yr old sister.

He figured out a code for in his love letters to let mom know he was alive and where he was as they weren’t allowed to tell and we didn’t have 24/7 news back then.

He came home and went to work in a TNT plant to support his family.
The plant had an escape slide in case of fire/explosion and they took nitro glycerin pills every day to combat ingestion of the chemicals!

He never talked about any of it

We buried him last June, 1 day before his 96th B Day.

That is a bad ass.
