Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 Race Recap: Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix
Racing on the short course on New Jersey’s Lake Hopatcong resulted in close competition and lots of turns for the Joker Powerboats/CRC team. “The race course was only 2 miles long due to the size of the lake, but it made for some great racing,” said driver Pete Smith. “It was similar to NASCAR’s Bristol Motor Speedway, on the water.”
The team started the race with high hopes of a good finish after building a new powerplant during the off season. Those hopes were dashed on the third lap, when while running in second place a new component of the ignition system failed. “That’s just how racing goes,” said throttleman Rich Smith. “You see it happen all the time in all levels of racing, a good race is ruined by the failure of a part that is totally out of your control.”
The team does not look at the weekend as a failure, however. They were able to test the new engine combination extensively on Saturday and the three laps run in the race were a good indication that the team will certainly be competitive this year.
The team plans to begin testing for the upcoming Atlantic City Grand Prix scheduled for June 21-23 as soon as the defective part is diagnosed and replaced.
The team’s 2013 partners include CRC Industries, Marren Fuel Injection, Saris Racing Engines, Optima Batteries and Cotnertrailers.com.
