switching to synthetic oil???
Hi ,
Our 6.2 mercury has @160 hours on it....we are the second owners and first owner along with us did regular maintenance....
Question is do you all think this is too many hours to be switching over to synthetic oil....the boat has only had conventional oil changes.
Thanks!
Bryan

It's a old wives tail about switching, the only time I have ever heard about problem on a marine engine and syn oil was the 500hp carb motors had a polished dist.shaft and the oil wouldn't climb up and it burnt up the gear. Yours won't have a polished shaft. I switch everything I own to Mobil 1 unless it's a bike then I run Motul 300v, I turn a wrench for a living and have for over 25 years.

I do appreciate your opinion...and having it from a fellow stafforidian is a plus too!
What is your oil change schedule and you say mobil1 in a boat....?

Depended on the motors, on a fairly mild motor like yours I would go 40 to 50 hours, on my old 572 800hp sc engines not past 30. Always new oil after 12 months no matter how many hours. Mobil one is realy good oil and most of the time I am looking at what I am taking out and it still looks new. I ran the fram hp filters also.

Johnny Reevis - used to do a ton of perf. boat work, economy slowed him down. Have never personally used him, do my own work. Supposed to be pretty good.
