i did have a alarm go off for a few seconds but that was way before the motor lost power.i blamed that on a loose connection.the alarm never came back and when it went off all gauges were normal.what can set the alarm off don?

Many things can set off an alarm:
Oil Bottle Level switch, TPS, Water Pressure, Temp...... Just to name a few.

If the alarm went off that usually means that the engine should be put on a computer to read the codes. This is really the only way to know what happened.

Sounds to me like you are in safe mode, check the sending units for your oil bottle, temp, etc.
