Default Nordic Rage 496HO

I have a 2004 Nordic Rage open bow with the 496HO and 1.5:1 and a 26 pitch Bravo1. Total hours now is 70.

A 2002 published boat test on Lake Havasu (~ sea level) with this identical package posted a 75.6 mph @5000 rpm (radar) -77.2 mph (GPS) top end with a lab finished 26 pitch Bravo 1 prop. Test was with two adult men and full gas (54 gallons). Dry weight is 3700 pounds.

My boat with the same set up and loading except prop is a stock 26 pitch Bravo 1 runs only 68 mph @ 5000 rpm (gps) with ambient temperature of 60F and 70 relative humidity at 916 foot elevation. With a lab finished 27 pitch Bravo 1 (previously a 28 pitch stock Bravo 1) I still run 68 mph at 4800-4900 rpm (gps).

Not as reliable, obviously, but in the same vein I have seen several Nordic Rages with the same setup and with gps speedometers advertised for sale claiming 75 mph top end.

It would seem to me that with the same rpm's and prop there should not be a 10 mph difference regardless of water chop conditions or a little head or tail wind. My runs were made both directions.

I would sure like to hear from other Nordic Rage owners with 496HO as to what top end you see based on GPS or radar. Not surprisingly my speedo says 75 mph when the gps says 68 mph.

Thanks

And yet another of our Texas bretheren, '05 Rage with 625-650 HP (I believe) 540 that just broke the 80 MPH mark (in 100* Texoma heat) and may have a little more speed left with some tweaking.

75 MPH with a stock HO doesn't sound right, but as I said in the other thread, what you're getting at that higher alt. sounds about right. The one boatingbent is talking about is the one that ran 65 on radar at Table Rock.

SEARAY JIM

Thanks for that clarification. That fits with the other comments so far on what to expect with a stock 496HO in a Rage. Especially telling since Table Rock is my home lake.

Any idea what 500-525hp will do for me with the right prop given my 68mph with the 425hp stock unit?

I think they figure 1 MPH for every 17Horses.....Meaning 100HP should get you around 6MPH

Hey Rage,
My buddy has an 02 with HO and he runs consistantly 68+/-1 mph GPS at 5000 foot elevation with a lab 24 near the rev limiter. We lose a solid 6-8 mph here.
I pull him here with his boat at 5000 feet for speed/endurance skiing work outs often and I can pull him 65-66 on GPS which is all we use for speed accuracy.
We hit 74+ GPS with ease with four big guys and full tanks (no skier) at Long Beach the day before the Catalina race. This was with a stock 26 at or near the rev limiter. (65 degrees and salt water)
Hope that helps...
Dave

That is amazing! Is your Rage an open or closed bow?

Mercury Racing told me that prop slippage from 10% to 12% is about as good as it gets. Slip is the percent difference between theoretical and actual mph.

My O/B Rage with a stock 26P and 1.5:1 gears runs 68mph at 5000 rpm or 17.1% slip (82.1 mph theoretical vs 68 mph actual) in fresh water.

Your Rage with 24P in fresh water runs 67mph at 4900 rpm or 9.8% slip (74.2 mph theoretical vs 67 mph actual) and with 26P in salt water 75mph at 5000rpm or 8.6% slip (82.1 mph theoretical vs 75 mph actual).

Rage,
His tach could be off slightly.
The numbers I gave were right at the rev limiter which which we know due to an occasional bump. (We prop this way for skiing purposes)
The 26 at 5150 at 74+ has a slip of 14% (We've also run 73 GPS consistantly at Lake Havasu in much warmer 90 degree temps and decent loads and 72+ at Lake Mead 1250 feet and very warm temps)
The lab 24 at 5150 and 68 has a slip of near 15% at our high altitudes of 5000+ feet.
These slip numbers appear right on for this boat.
Closed bow on this setup BTW.
Their run at Havasu may have been during the winter months. Boats will generally run faster there than even on salt water from what I've seen. Zero humidity and 50 degree temps = max possible hp and minimal wind resistance. Throw in a good wind chop and walla!! Kind of a perfect world scenerio
Also the prop may have actually been labbed to a 27...Who knows for sure

Dave

Dave,

Yes, I think your your numbers make total sense. The Havasu boat test numbers versus the claimed prop/rpm/speed do not in my novice opinion. To run 75.6mph at 5000 rpm with a 26P prop (82.1 mph theoretical) gives a 7.9% slip????

Thanks!
