Default External Steering on a Heat!

Hi All,

I have a 2001 Heat and looking to install external steering, but looks like my ehaust is right where the steering will need to bolt??? Anybody have heat with external steering? Did you have issues with working around the exhaust?

I installed steering on my 95 28 Heat. The trick is getting the wing plate that mounts on top of the outdrive. WPM made one for me it worked great. The entire install took two of us 4 hours.

I had mine done at the factory. If you want me to measure something for you, let me know.

Indy, looks like they relocated your thru-haul for the steering on your boat. I had an issue with the exhaust on mine, top mounted wing plate solved problem.

Thanks for the responses. With a little research I found that some Heats came with exhaust located like Indy’s and some like mine closer to the out drive. Also, I had Teague tips put on my boat when I bought her and they stick out 5.5 inches I would guess about 3 inches more than the stock set.

Anyway, I talked to Lonny at Nordic today and looks like WPM will customize what I need. I assume custom means another K……

Indy, thanks for the offer you can see by the pic that mine is set up a little different.

Here's a picture of my Stern, the exhaust ring is only 5.5 inches from the drive.

Yeah...I guess there are some advantages to ordering new from the factory Good luck with the install...post some pics when you are done.

You might want to look into Imco also, I think they do something similar to what you're looking for.

Another option would be to add an extension box w/ hyd. steering. Merc's ITS, IMCO, Bravo Shop all have them. Who knows, you may pick up some speed at the same time. It is only money.
