Default Point Pleasant race info and schedules

Hello Race Fans,

Remember last year while we raced in Point Pleasant, the lights went out throughout the entire Northeast for the whole weekend? Now this year, on Friday the 13th, we have a named storm coming up the coast, which may push some heavy swells in our direction. This is why some race teams refer to this race as Point Unpleasant, yet they love racing here.

Love or hate the big water, this is where you’ll find it. So if you’re a race fan, dust off your binoculars, get some film for the instamatic camera, rub some sun block on the kids and come on down to Jenkinsons at noon on Friday and watch the events unfold. The race starts at 1PM but any seasoned race fan knows that the real show is actually before the race as the boats roar out the Manasquan Inlet at full speed. For a magical five minutes, the Coast Guard makes the inlet a safety zone and no traffic is allowed to enter from either end. At 12:50 the boats will light up the inlet as 30 ocean racers run full speed out the inlet. If you’ve never seen this spectacle, get a good seat early, if you’ve been there before, you know the end of the inlet where the rive meets the ocean is the place to be. Then walk down to Jenks and watch the race. Just 200 yards south of the inlet you’ll see turn 4, right in front of Jenkinsons beach.

If you’re stuck at work, put on the headset and listen live like never before. This race will be carried LIVE from flag to flag on www.talkoffshore.com. Martin Sanborne will be at the party on Thurs night and reporting from Jenkinsons on Friday. His broadcast will start at noon on Friday. This should be interesting as Martin as never been to Point Pleasant before.

If you’re a volunteer captain and you’d like to see the paperwork early, you can download it at www.njoffshore.homestead.com/Aug_04_boats.doc. Don’t forget the MANDITORY captain’s meeting is at 6pm at Jenkinsons Pavilion. At the meeting you’ll receive two tickets for the 7pm party. Before the meeting, please look around for a purple flag or a medic flag. If you have one from the last race, don’t take another one. We need to collect them ALL after this race.

In Atlantic City, the GPS placement and retrieval worked fine so there will be no changes. Here’s how the GPS system works.
1. All race boats must be in the wet pits (on trailer or in water) between 10:30 and 11:30 on race day to have the GPS installed. Once the unit is installed, you can’t leave the pits to launch elsewhere. You must go directly from the pits to the ocean once the GPS is installed.
2. After the race, all boats must return to the wet pits for the GPS to be removed by an OPA official. Failure to return the GPS at the wet pits is a 5-minute penalty. Broken boats will receive special attention but you must call in on 78a to race control and ask for a waterborne GPS removal.
3. Here’s how the GPS penalty system works. Lets use P5 as an example. The break out speed is supposed to be 70mph, well we don’t want to DQ someone that goes over by just a little bit, so we use a time penalty.
Up to 70.4 we let you slide, no penalty assessed.
From 70.5 to 71.4 a one-minute penalty is assessed
71.5 to 74.4 a three-minute penalty is assessed
Over 74.5 and a five-minute penalty is assessed.

Expect to see a few new boats in Point Pleasant for this race as BJ and Mad Dog bring out their new warrior and go wabbit hunting after the Nesquik Bunny. Will Buckshot finally cross the starting line in 2004? Does Lukie’s new Pantera have what it takes to hold together for the entire race? Can Firewater™ get out of the pits without needing to dredge the channel? Will Obsessions new crashboxes carry the boat to the finish line? All questions will be answered this Friday on the racecourse.
