HP and speed
What kind of HP would be needed for a 28' with 1 motor, full cabin, to run 75-80 mph wide open?
Looking to move into a pantera in the next year or so.
Also I must have a red boat, if new would you paint or gelcoat?
I think the pantera would look wild in red with the big green eyes.

I think Glen's boat with the 600 Innovation runs 82-85 with a full pleasure set up. I am sure he will chime in here soon. Hope to let you know soon what one with a 575 and the ITS wil run.

Using Von Bongo's numbers here's an estimate of power vs. speed. An HP500 gives over 75 mph...does that sound about right? If so, adding a Procharger for 700 HP would give 90 mph! Have fun at the dreaming and designing stage of getting the boat. IMHO, it's the best part.

The ability to run at 75 ,80 plus mph in rough water is what every one seeks , but few boats on the market can do just that no matter what they claim. Most of them want to super sky in 3 footers not hang in the water. what good is aboat if it does 95 mph only in calm water and can only run 65 in rough, to me its wasted money.! my 24ft would run 85 in 3 to5s and stay in the water, while the 32 and 35ft fountains had to back off! I dont want to sit at the dock because its too rough!

Most people can not handle anything over 75 mph in any boat .
Top speed is for bragging rights . Thats it !!
I agree that a boat that can run 75 + in the rough stuff is highly desireable . How many boats can actually do it ? Not many !
Most people who also brag about speed usually have no idea
what their speed is , except for what their erroneous speedometer tells them .
I have come to the conclusion that most are full of **** !!
In my 8 years of boating , I can only say I have been passed once in the rough . Most people don't have the balls .
If it can't handle the rough , put it away !!

It's good to know that it will take big water, where I boat we don't see very big water, but with a Pantera, I may expand my options on where I can take a boat.
Jmemoli, your right, I would not see over 65-70 most of the time as I have my wife and kids on the boat most of the time.
Even 65 where I boat is sometimes to fast, many stupid people.
I was thinking that a boat that would go 75-80 would still cruise around 50, thats where I would like to run for long trips, then have more when it's needed.
Also where in NJ are you??
So it looks like 600 to 650hp would do it.
What type of power would everybody use?
Carb(s), EFI, blower?
How about drive?
Remember it may only see max speed a few times
I would just like to know it will go if needed.

Pantera's crush waves. There is just no dought about it. I've rode in Thirsty Turtle' 28 a few time. Last time out we took on a pack of 8-10 cruiser that where hogging the channell. I don't want to exadurate(spelling) but some of the wakeds had to be pushing 6 feet. We where humping right along too. Id say we where running 55 or so. I couldn't believe it, we just busted through them like we where on a cloud. smalller boats where having to drop off plane. It was amazing.
The boat only runs upper 60's with twin 454's.

Tom ,
My boat is in Brick , Nj at my summer house .
It is a 2002 PAntera w/ twin 500HP motors .
It runs 85 with some chop . At 3000 RPM , it cruises at 50 mph. It turns twin 28 Bravo 1 props @ 5100-5200 RPM .
If you want to setup a new 28 , I would suggest a 502 with Blower . the only problem is the Bravo 1 will have a problem holding up .
It may be for sale if you are interested .
IF you're out cruising , stop by . I'm in Silver bay , near the Toms River bridge .
