Thats a million dollar question when talking about boats that are built by a custom builder . My 79 had a 60 gal in the back and a 40 gal in the front . All you can do is assume that the bulk heads are placed in the same place from 79 to 81 and that the 60 gal was the standard size tank .
Good luck

thanks guys that's real helpful. i will go for 60 i am sure a few here and there wont make much difference.
one other daft question but i started to fill her up when empty. i mean pumped dry empty. she is still on the trailer and i was using a Jerry can that is about 5 US gallons and i put two in and the needle didnt move. i thought the gauge wasnt working until the third went in and it crept up a bit.
so there i am now thinking, is there a reserve calculated into the sender or am i barking mad to trust that. empty means you just ran out as opposed to you might get home still.

The travel of the sending unit probably doesn't go all the way to the bottom. That's not a built in reserve it's just the limitations of the sender. You'll find out where empty is the first time you run out..

i am guessing you are right joe. i was in a delusional state where i thought i might avoid that if i could.
cig3 when you say the pick up do you mean the pipe or the sender pick up ? ie i might end up throwing 10 gallon in before it hits the point where i am likely to suck fuel from or 10 gallon in where i am getting fuel but the it hasnt hit the float ?
