Whenever you mix 30mph north winds, and you're running at the bottom of lake Michigan, you're gonna get 6-8 ft swells. When you run those at a quartering sea for 65-70 miles, something's gonna give, and usually the water wins. 
Considering the brutal water conditions, I believe all the boats went out again after lunch. That's where we started seeing some damage.
