Depending on your cash flow cats are fast!!! read the fourms and talk to people on here most are pretty strait up thanks and good luck in your search!!

I absolutely back that up with first person GPS experience - I had a 1999 280 PQ, 502 Mag, bought new from the factory. Best I saw was 66 mph in fresh water. Lab the prop and it'll tease 70.

A Sun 288 will be generally a bit faster but I found it to be significantly smaller in the cockpit. YMMV...

My old 280 w/502 would hit 70 w/ a labbed 26P and "just" the right day. 99% of the time it was a solid 68 mph.

I did have Stainless Marine manifolds & re-programmed ECU too.
Somewhere here on OSO - I posted my prop/speed results a few times. I looked to see if I still have them - I don't.

The 280 is a great boat - and is better built w/ better hardware too. The lines are not as "sleek" as a 288, but in "my opinion", I would prefer the PQ 280.

Hey Bob.....I recently bought an '03 280 with the 496 mag ho that is completely stock with silent choice with mufflers and the best I can see on speedo is 65mph wich is 62 mph on gps. I am spinning 4700 rpm with a 26 pitch labbed prop. Recently after a fluid /filter change I had dropped 500 rpm which I am hunting for now. Before the rpm loss I was spinning 5200 with the 26 labbed and showed 67 mph on the speedo but didnt have my gps with me. Maybe I should of looked for a 280 with the 500 hp!!!

oil & filter change and lost 500 rpm??? I would check for a vaccum line off or something of that nature. That just doesn't sound right. If you have a 1.5 gear ratio,a labbed 26 "should "be about right

Crap.....it really pisses me off too!! I do have the 1.5 gear ratio. The boat idles fine and I havent noticed it being more sluggish out of the hole...I checked plug wires...none were off. The next thing I am going to do is pull all the plugs and have a look at them......thanks for the thought on the vacuum line, I'll check those out too. The other thing I need to do is drop a liter of oil out of the motor...the dealer put in 10 instead of the recomended 9.....but I doubt that will make the difference. I think a compression test is next.......I would love tohave this thing run 67 on gps.
Again thanks for the help

Too much oil is really bad but I don't think 1 gt is causing your problem.make sure it's not an 8 qt pan,2 qts could cause it.Too much oil will cost you an engine. Bob

removed 2 quarts to get to the level it needed to be at...accelerating out of the hole seemed to be a bit better.....got a little more rpm out of if too...4850- 4900 but still not at 5200 where I was. Maybe I am not over trimming any more I dont know how fast it was pulling ...the speedo quit on me!! Now I have a new issue to deal with!!
