Considering a PQ 280 Silencer - Info wanted
I've been looking at a 28' singles lately and happened upon the Powerquest 280 Silencer. Seems like they are a great bang for the buck. It seems that year for year, option for option, the PQ has so much to offer. Anything I should know before making a long range trip to see one or two?
I know the company has been bought and sold a bunch of times and are no longer in business. I've also read that these boats have a balsa wood core.
However, in their hay day, it seems that PQ was highly regarded ranking up there with Sunsation. I mention Sunsation as that is my first choice but I can't pass up at least looking at a PQ for $15K less.

PQ made a nice boat. The cockpit will be a bit bigger than a 288 Sunsation. The main things to look for on them would be gel spider cracking (not all, but some suffered from this) and the wiring wasn't exactly the best on them. Otherwise they are solid boats. The Sunsation will carry better resale and comes with the best factory support in the business. PQ used to have great factory support as well, but under the new ownership it is spotty at best right now. Good luck with your purchase!

I you saying that PQ is still in business? What are they building today?
Also, on a 502 MPI, how many hours until a complete rebuild? How about the top half? How about on a Bravo 1?

No, I am not an expert by any means. There is a thread in this forum on the PQ factory and the new ownership. You can read it to catch up on where the factory is today as far as what is known to the general public. As for the motor/drive question, so much of that depends on how they were maintained, how hard they were run, what environment they were operated in, etc. There are motors running around with 1000 + hours with no problems and others that are junk within 200 - 300.

With all boats, the NADA average retail is just a guide. Some boats sell below NADA, some sell at NADA, and some sell above NADA. Given today's market (and I mean the next 5 days), how do you think I should price a 1999 PQ 280 w/ 502 and trailer? I was thinking something below NADA average retail... at or even slightly below NADA low retail.

Thinking of selling mine, my kids all play travel softball, so I don't use it. Beautiful condition, 1999 502 efi, CMI headers, dual batteries, great stereo, windscreen, trailer, 230 hours, of which 220 are fresh water. Bought from original owner in Wisconson. Can send pics. $39,000.
