I had a 1994 290. The 290 is a great boat. I was thinking seriously about putting A/C on the boat and had done all the research. Marine Air Systems built ( I am not sure if they still do) a 750 BTU system that would fit in the Port side gunwale in the engine compartment, just in front of the battery. If you crawl in the engine compartment you will see a ledge just in front of the battery, the unit would set on top of that ledge.
The through hulls and electrical hook up are straight forward from there. The air return and discharge would need to be run through the port combing panel into the cabin. Depending on the year of your 290 will determine how those get routed. Ours had a large hanging locker with a door and a sink and mirror that complicated things. But it was still do-able.
It would be a great project, but would take a fair amount of planning and time. I figured cost for the entire system was about $1500 not including labor. I ususally work for myself for free.
Good Luck
