Installed the carrier bearing assembly in the second drive last night. These drives differ from the standard gimbal bearing design in a couple ways. These use stacked sealed carrier bearings to support a double U-Joint or CV assembly with slip yokes on each end. Once assembled, the gear box slides in and bolts up to the carrier assembly.

Only down side to this design is you need to pull the hinge pins to remove the lower unit. Say to replace a u-joint. To remove the gear set requires unbolting the drive assembly from the transom. They won't fit thru the #6 size transom hole. Same goes for adjusting drive height up or down. For that reason I'm having transom gaskets cut rather than using silicone for final assembly.

Drives are together. I think the refurb job turned out pretty nice.
Can't wait to see them spinning some big pitch 18's on the GoPro, and throwing a monster roost..

Mounted a drive up last week with the newly modified extension boxes. Even with the added 2.8deg up angle, they still required an additional 1.6" raise from our original bolt pattern. But the with help of another great Bridgeport guru, now we have extra holes to play with our final X dimension.
Some might think the Bravo or SSM lower unit spacer plate setup is easier. I'm beginning to lean that way a little myself...

Last we mocked up some custom CAD engine plates. Ok so they are actually plywood cut with a sawsall, but ya gotta start somewhere...
To clear these larger diameter transmissions at the transom, we had to move everything forward about 4 inches. This also equals moving down an extra inch due to our unique driveline angle. Which somehow should work to our advantage in the overall big picture.
Was very happy to be working with a master builder on this part. One not afraid to scribe a line and grab the saw to modify a "Futtock" for some added pan clearance. Plus I learned a new word, from someone besides Goggle..

I had no idea Andrew bought your old boat! I've been a customer of Andrew's for years, and we have never talked boats so I'll have to ring him up. The project looks absolutely awesome. I have been working on twin turbo LS engines in my Challenger Aerotech for about a year, but think I'd like to do some baby Duramax's in a 32' Fountain next. Good luck!
