Second guy was going to try to press it off too and if that didn’t work try grinding them down then either sleeve the shaft or use spray weld then machine it back to the correct thickness.
I could have gotten out much cheaper that way if it would have worked but I made the decision to stop and order a new one. I could see him spending 2 weeks on it and something go wrong (shaft be out of true, etc) and then have to order a shaft anyway. And plus I like the idea of there being all new everything in the drives.

Totally understand. Cost of failed repair+ new part in the end.

Galling to say the least...

Are the fluids the same for both shaft and gear/chain reduction housing?

They run mercury 80 to 90 weight gear oil.

Got the shaft installed in the thrust tube, the spec is to have the end play at between 3 and 7 thousandths of an inch. I’m right at 4 thousandths. The play is adjusted with very thin shims between the ball socket and the outside race of the thrust bearing.

I got the left drive put together.

Also addressed the much dreaded installation of the anchor light and gps speedometer antenna on my radar arch. I drilled a hole into the side of the arch thru the starboard gunnel then drilled a 1/2” hole in the center of the top and try to run a plumbers snake from the bottom up. It kept getting stuck so I had to tape my boroscope to it to try and find the snag. 😂

I started on this yesterday, but had to take a break after my drill slipped out of my hands and came back around and popped me in the head. Lol 😀

I put some ice on it and finished it this afternoon.

We ran the boat today for a few hours and everything went well.

Perfect at our local boat ramp. 😀 Hopefully it will work well at other ramp angles too.
