33 and 38 AVS molds - Whatever happened to them?
I've been a Wellcraft guy for years and love my 38 AVS. I was just curious, whatever happened to the molds for the 33 and 38 AVS hulls? Does Wellcraft still own them? I would think they could be updated a bit and still make a helluva boat. Just wondering as good, clean AVS boats are getting hard to find. Anybody know?

last I heard they were sitting in yard in Sarasota and were all bent up for being moved by fork lifts. We still have all the original Team Scarab molds with the flat decks and the 43 wellcraft deck. We can build from 17 to 51 foot boats. The 38 and 43 s are stepped the 17, 26 and 31 are straight bottoms along with the 46

Interesting... it looks like the molds on Craigslist are for some of their older models and Team Archer has the 38 AVS. The 33 was a good running boat, too.

Question for Team Archer: Betty Cook set a record from California to Mexico in an outboard powered Scarab. It said it was a 29? Was this a blocked 31? What does the 17 ft look like as well?

Baja World Record by Betty Cook, Larry Smith & John Connor.
Old thread, but here we go,
May 26th, 1978 Betty Cook and her two compatriots set the Baja World Record. The remarkable feat with this record was not the speed, but the troubles they encountered and overcame. Read about it below courtesy of the Powerboat Archive. The boat they used was Larry Smith's first design, the Scarab 9 Meter(launched in 1975). This is the same hull as the later Wellcraft 300, and so on(29'6" loa 8.0 beam). Manufactured in 1978 it was one of few ever rigged with outboard motors and it was also a rare Kevlar49 boat. I saw the boat about 10 years ago in the Corona, CA area. The Team Scarab 31 by Larry Smith is the same design as the ones sold as Scarab 31 Viper by Wellcraft. The 31 has an 8'6" beam and 31'1" loa. The 17 is also sold as the Kona 17. With electrical power by Torqeedo it's a cool little cruiser.

Archer Marine has the molds and that's a very good thing.
"They had leased the mold from Larry and built 5 boats(430 Eagle XP). We have the all of the Larry Smith molds from 17 to 51 foot the only Wellcraft deck mold is the 43 the rest are all flat decks."
"...yes both the 38 and 43 are stepped bottoms(the Eliminator boats). As for the totally new sculpted deck its the standard Wellcraft deck with my flat dash that I did for the diesel projects."

Even in this thread there is confusion.
I think it's between what is a Team Scarab and Wellcraft? In one post it is the Wellcraft we're in Florida for sale on Craigslist in another Team Archer has them.
i thought I recall various posts that Wellcraft destroyed all that they had.

Wellcraft had a complete set of molds that they produced all of the production boats from. There hull molds were built from plugs taken out of the Team Scarab molds and they produced there own deck molds. The molds that are for sale are the Wellcraft production molds Not the Team Scarab molds. I hope this answers your questions. Regards Dan
