I tell ya, we had a small crack on one side and it was a pain everywhere you went trying to be sure a fender would not hit and break it.
Not the best wellcraft design....now if it was an aluminum vent...that would have been nice

Hey gang -
We have a 29ft. Scarab also and the vent covers are always having to be repaired. Even with bumpers on the rear of the boat they take a beating. I'm connected to the machine shop industry and have considered what Tinkerer suggested earlier ... have some made out of aluminum. I have several customers with CNC machines and they could make these things with a little hard work and dedication. The cost is an issue. One or two sets would be prohibitive I suspect from a cost standpoint simply from knowledge of the amount of time it takes to get set up for something like this - programming the machine, fixturing, etc. However, if there was enough interest and several sets were made at the same time it could very well make it worthwhile for all of us. $150.00 each for the plastic ones seems outrageous to me. I'd like to think that we might be able to get aluminum for that price if there was enough interest. If several people contact me and show an interest I'll remove one of ours and take it to some places and see what it would cost to have some machined from aluminum. We'd never have to worry about them breaking again if they were aluminium. BTW, the machining industry is terribly depressed right now so interest from a machine shop might be easy to get about now.

I had a shop make some aluminum vents very similar to the plastic ones for my Wellcraft Scarab a few years ago and they turned out VERY nice and were of course bullet proof. The plastic ones were junk and I didn't feel like replacing them every year. You guys are on the right track. Get the aluminums ones made, you'll be happy.
I will be very easy to make them on a Mill. Just have to cut some slots and then grooves. Takes no time at all on a good Mill.
Good luck,
Jody

I've taken a nice, leisurely, 200 mile drive to remove the vents from our boat. I've contacted a couple of local shops I know and both are interested in taking a look at what is involved in making these out of aluminum. I'll keep you advised of the progress on this project and what the cost might be. For those interested, I need to hear from you as quickly as possible. Quantity lowers the price for certain, so this will play into the picture.
