Default 31 Sonic

Hey there...I am sooooo wanting a 31 Sonic. Love the cabin space, real deep V boat, radar arch would be nice! I have just never ridden in a 31 Sonic. I have 2 friends with a 35 and 38 and they say that the 31 is awesome, and no porpoising. You guys own them, be honest with me if you would. Is this thing a problem boat? I hear about the nice ride and rough water and room and such, what are the negatives? Chime walking, manueverability? Anything? Still trying to sell mine but can only afford to go up to a 31 still and NO SC's! or carb configurations...appreciate everyones honesty. Not a Scarab fan, cat's are too expensive and no cabin room, Sunsation is the ticket but quite expensive! Can you pull the motor without removing the back seat or hatch? How about room in front of the pulleys and changing plugs between motors, is this a narrow boat? There are none even close to me so I am trying to gather all that I can before making the long drive or flights to get one. ANyone have a used trailer they want to sell that fits a 2000 Sonic 31?

You can get it to porpoise at very low speed if you over trim. About 40mph. Trim down about 2 taps and it's gone. I would put it up against any boat in its class in the rough stuff. I've been 70mph in 6-7 footers. It's a blast! Nothing loose or broken in 9+ years of owning the boat (1997 31, 454 mags). NEVER chine walks, stable to the point of boring until the water gets big. From what I've seen of Sunsation, they are about the same quality level of a Baja (I had 2 I bought new), not comparable to the quality of a Sonic. The Sunsation is faster in calm water, doubt it in 5+. I bought my 31 new after 2 Baja's and was amazed at the quality for the same $$ as a 29 Outlaw was going to run me. Buy one, you won't regret it.
Better yet buy mine, I've got carb 454 mags, and a pair of 525SC blowers I can hook you up with to complete your list of what you don't want! How's that for salesmanship, must be why I'm a mechanic!

I love my 2006 31ss!

I spent over two years looking for a replacement for my 28ss.
I looked at Velocity, Fountain, Formula, Donzi, and countless
used boats. I decided to buy a new Sonic because I believed that
the new owners would come through with what I wanted.
The new boat is a dream to run.

I would go for the arch. I can run over 70MPH with the Bimini
top without a problem. Try that on a boat without an arch, and
you will probably blow it off!

Good luck on your search,

Warren

I am very happy with mine as well. The backrest for the rear bench is part of the hatch so if you need to pull a motor you do not need to remove the seat base. Pulleys are very accessable as are spark plugs. My boat likes a little bit of tab up to about 3800 RPM's then it doesn't need any over that. Good luck in your search and let me know if you need any financing.

great boats, we bought ours in 2001 , its a 96 with 454 mags and it takes the rough stuff really well and very family friendly . I thought by now we would of got the 3ftits but this boat is simply a great size and a great all around boat

What's your location? I might be interested in selling my trailer. It's an all white manning triaxle. Been thinking of putting an aluminum under it.

Engine room is tight, don't need to remove anything to get motors out. Getting to the center back plugs is a bear, but doable.

No complaints about the 31ss, running 454mag carbs, no chine walking or porpoising. Solid boats!!

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I am looking at a 2000 with twin 502's. Being enlisted military, Uncle Sam has limited my ability to purchase new. I figure after 500-600 hrs, I would need to rebuild and that would be easier on 502's than 496's? Thank You again (oh-will probably have to pick up an aluminum trailer as I live in Mississippi at the moment.
