Powerboat finales at two different cities

Unlike last year's world championship offshore powerboat race at Key West, the 2005 season is ending this week with sanctioning bodies holding championships in two different Florida cities.
The first of three days of competition for Super Boat International Productions/American Power Boat Association racers at the Key West World Championship is Wednesday. They also race Saturday and Sunday. The Offshore Super Series has its world championship starting Thursday at St. Petersburg.
After last year's races at Key West, officials from the organizations involved tried to have a combined event for 2005, but negotiations failed.
"It would be nice to come together for one event to close the year off," said John Tomlinson of Miami, who has competed on both circuits this year and will throttle the Superboat Budweiser Select in Key West. "I used to get frustrated, but if [organizers] don't work it out, they don't work it out.
"Key West has the tradition and Anheuser-Busch would rather for us to be [there]."
Plus, said Tomlinson, who has won nine world titles, "All the Superboats will be in Key West. So for us, it will be a true world championship."
The SBI/APBA racers will compete on a 6.5-mile course through Key West harbor and the surrounding waters. The fleet will be divided into three separate races each day, with starts at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
A pass for the week, including viewing and admission to the race village/pits area at Truman Annex, is $95 per person. Daily village admission on race days and non-race days is $15 and $5, respectively. There are also a variety of VIP packages. Visit www.superboat.com or call 305-296-6166.
