How much setback for a 24' OB Hyd Jack Plate?

Hi All,
The only way I can get any speed of of my 300 V8 on the 24' is to trim the motor way up. That gets pretty unstable and it starts to do some wild scary chine walking.
I figure I need a better bow lifting prop then the 23 mirage, I have a 24P big ear chopper coming and a 25P renegade 4 blade coming as well, but it also tells me the prop needs to be higher so I don't use as much trim.
Bash has said that setback and jacks don't matter on the 24 SB but I heard he has both so maybe it didn't make a difference for him?
I had a 6" Bob's jack plate deal fall through. I'm guessing the right amount of setback would be 8-10"s but there is a 17" Porta plate lift for sale here locally from a reputable guy.
My boat has the notched transom with no steps.
Is anyone else using a hydraulic lift?
Did it make a positive or negative difference for you?
What is the optimum amount of setback, and what was too much?
Thanks
Evan

Have you corresponded with Superbash directly?
He has tried about everything on his boat...
Last I remember, his engine was mounted on a 18" setback with the prop shaft 2-1/2" to 3" below the bottom of the boat.
I don't think you should mount that monster V8 on much of a setback, but
a jacking plate will help you dial her in for sure.
Oh-Zone had a 24' with a 300X on a jack plate so I'm sure he can help you.
Lightspeed recently had a 24' with a 225 so he would be another great source.

My hyd. jackplate setback was I believe 4 1/2" I would have loved to have that on back of a fixed 12" setback. Bash and I have discussed this and felt that would be the bomb! Bashes boat (I have ridden in) handled quite differently than mine. In turns his 300X pushed the azz end around considerably more than mine. Nothing scary but certainly noticable.

The stripped V8, (no VRO or PS) is about 100#s more then the 3.0 L, V6 Merc.
I'm not so much worried about pushing the rear in turns, I'm concerned about getting max top speed without the CRAZY, WILD Chine walk.
Were you guys having chine walk issues before adding the jack and did that cure it.
(well, it doesn't chine walk on normal trim, just WOT w above +3, (+5 on my meter but I have a neg wedge on the transom)
I have 65 on speedo w down trim and 74 on speedo w way up trim in flat water, but can't hold it there for long before things get really scary with the flip flopping/chine walk.
Thanks

I bet that you can cure a lot of your chine walking problems with the right prop.
My boat chine walks a lot more with a 3 blade than with a 4 blade.
I suggest that you set your prop shaft at 3-3-1/2" below the bottom and test with different props...

The prop shaft is about 4"s below the Vee.
I have a 23 Mirage that came w the boat and it's definitely the wrong prop.
I tested a 29P Tempest which was way too much prop, Same speed but couldn't too trim much w/o blowing out, still had chine walk but not as sloppy as w the 23P.
I have a 24P Big Ear Chopper getting trued and cleaned up, and a 25P Renegade 4 blade coming.
I think with a prop that flys the bow better I would need to use less trim for max speed but with both the 23P and 29P I had to trim way up for max speed so I think the prop is too deep and the motor is as High on the transom as it will go.
That's why I think I need a Jack.

I ran a 24p Trophy Plus labbed and likedit. I also bought a used lightning et with the same top end results, lousy mid range and tuff getting out of the hole. A big ear chopper is worth a try.. My boat chine walked when jacked and trimmed to the moon w/o tabs. I could always counterstear it. ( I had external steering on mine) Running the 280s kplanes parrallel with the bottom also helped. With my jack plate all the way up the bullet center was parrallel with the bottom. Id always start with the jackplate set down(a plus in the huge stuff) and jack up as needed usually running about midway up. the 300x had a low water pickup in the bullet, but when getting to the high side I would start to loose water pressure. Do you have a water pressure guage? If you start going up you really gotta have one.
