SHENANDOAH, Texas -- A Shenandoah police officer is lucky to be alive after a sport utility vehicle slammed into his patrol car on Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Shenandoah police said Officer Danny Nabors pulled over a suspicious car that left a Hampton Inn shortly before 3 a.m.
After Nabors pulled over the car on the shoulder of the North Freeway near Portofino Plaza, he got back in his car and left the door open. A SUV then rammed into the patrol car's door, police said.
Investigators said the SUV also hit the car Nabors had pulled over.
"The officer is counting his blessings tonight because, luckily, he had both of his legs inside the car. The SUV barely missed them," Sgt. Bryan Carlisle said.
Police said there were other officers on the scene during the collision who helped Nabors and the other driver.
"There was debris and glass flying everywhere but, luckily, the other officers were there," said Carlisle.
Carlisle said this is the third time in less than a year one of their officers has been hit on the North freeway.
"If possible, get on another lane and give the officer as much space as possible because you never know what can happen out there," he said.
Police said the SUV driver is underage and he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. He and his two passengers were not injured in the wreck.
