Lawmakers To Look At Legalizing Gambling
By Mary Benton

POSTED: Wednesday, May 26, 2010
UPDATED: 6:40 am CDT May 26, 2010

HOUSTON -- With a projected $18 billion budget shortfall forcing some state agencies to cut services and layoff employees, some Texas lawmakers say it's time to take another look at legalizing gambling, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

WATCH IT: State Lawmakers May Consider Legalizing Gambling

State Rep. Garnet Coleman, a Houston Democrat, said he will hold a forum on gaming this summer. The goal is to educate his fellow lawmakers about the pros and cons of expanding gaming to include casinos and slot machines.

"We want to make sure that if we're going down this road, that it's the right road and everyone has their eyes wide open," said Coleman.

The state lawmaker's pitch to study the idea comes on the heels of a new poll that shows Texans favor legalizing gambling to help meet the state's budget problems.

The telephone poll, conducted by Rasmussen, showed that 57 percent of respondents supported casino gambling in Texas, 33 percent opposed it and 10 percent were undecided.

The new push and poll numbers, however, have not swayed Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

While in Houston Tuesday, Perry said that his position on gaming has not changed.

"I think it's a very poor way for Texas to fund its public schools and government operations," said Perry, who pointed out that lottery and horseback racing are legal alternatives for Texas residents.

While lawmakers go back and forth over the controversial plan, a bus company in northeast Houston continues to operate daily round trips to casinos in Louisiana.

Johnny Atkins said he makes the trip at least once a month, but would keep his money in Texas if lawmakers legalized slot machines.

"We got scratch off in Texas, but we can't have the machines? It doesn't make sense," said Atkins.

Coleman said all aspects of gaming should be examined.

"What will it mean to have a casino in our back yard, instead of flying to Las Vegas or going to Louisiana?" Coleman asked.

Yup, i saw it the other day its on the mantel... it says

Dear CBB,

thanks for allowing me to stay in your home the other evening i appreciate your hospitality... I would have rather stayed in the tahoe with landing strip and the human mammography machine but by pulling me out of the truck and putting me in bed you took away my excuse of being drunk and uninhibited and therefore i had the pleasure of a hangover the next day without the guilt free banging and carnival circus show that would have surely taken place had you left me in the confines of the suburban.... ( they are only called taho's when i am a passenger )

thanks again for everything, although i slept alone that evening I would still suggest you wash your sheets....

fondest wishes,
miniature dancing banana
