2003 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 Stock Hitch
I need some info regarding weight ratings for a stock hitch on a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab 4x4 w/ H.O. Cummins & 6-speed manual. The owners manual says it is equipped w/ a Class IV hitch that is rated up to 1,200#'s tongue weight or 12,000#'s GTWR (Gross Towing Weight Rating). It does not signify if the 12,000#'s is w/ or w/o load distributing hitch. So which is it?
I have purchased a Reese Titan Class V hitch, which is rated at 12,000#'s GTW Weight Carrying or 14,000#'s GTW w/ load distributing hitch. As I put it up to the truck to mount it, I discovered it is made to install below the stock hitch........which I don't like. It hangs down too low and doesn't look too good. The Titan seems to be made much heavier than the stock hitch not to mention it has a 2 1/2" receiver opening compared to the stock 2" hitch. However if they are weight rated the same, I just as soon stay with the stock hitch.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chad

Chad, I am not sure about the specified ratings on the Dodge. I bet Troutly will know, as he is on the ball on all this stuff.
However, check out

I have a Class-V Putnam Hitch on my Avalanche 2500 and it actually tucks CLOSER to the bumper than the stock one I took off.

Sydwayz-
Thanks bro! It looks like Putnam makes a 15,000# hitch for the '03 Ram. I may call them to see if it mounts in the existing space or below the stock hitch. Although you have to jack the bed up in order to get the stock hitch off, it would be worth it to have a hitch mounted in the stock space...... It looks like they only make 2" solid ball mounts rated at 10,000#'s. That doesn't make sense when your hitch is rated at 15,000#'s and you have a ball rated for 20,000#'s????
It might be overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!

I've got a truck like yours and been down the EXACT road- too much scoop to post. Call me 479 636 4669. Buck would be a good bet for current options.
