4000 lbs per tire wheels rated for 4200... suspension upgraded to carry 16500 7.5 front, 9 rear.. just have to have documentation... GVWR is for factory parts only any changes and the vehicle can get rerated by DOT just takes work...

10 ply 38/14.50 toyos.. DOT rated 4018lbs each..... 235/85 10 ply rated for 3005 lbs each... see difference... that is 4000 lbs of usable capacity provided everything else id beefed aswell...

Private recreational vehicles do not require CDL operators. If they did, every motorhome driver in the country would be parked at a weigh station right now.

its not that the type of vehicle its the WEIGHT... most RV 's (except for the bigones) are under 26000 lbs...

Federal law prohibits the change in vehicle weight ratings. I investigated this several years ago- with our truck's manufacturers and the DOT- through our attorneys. We had a bunch of 33K GVW trucks and had a hard time finding driver/technicians. Never carried more than 20K total weight so we wanted to have them de-rated to 26K.

The only way a truck leaves the manufacturer with an open GVW is when they are sold to an upfitter- an RV company, ambulance manufacturer, etc. They are the only one's who can assign final GVW aside from the manufacturer.

The discussion isn't on what the state's DOT enforcement people are looking for at weigh stations- it's what's not only safe but within the manufacturer's ratings- the things that will ensure you are covered by your insurance in the event of an accident- also the things that might prevent a wrongful death charge against you.

If you know some magic loophole, you can make yourself a major fortune taking 33K GVW mediums and converting them to non-CDL 26K trucks.

Why then is a CDL not required for our 52,000# MCI?

This thread has got me thinking about if I’m over limit and what my boat and trailer weight. I have a Baja .38 Special. Well, I went to a certified Cat scale and weighted boat and trailer. To my surprise it weighted 13600lbs with no toys, coolers and less than ¼ tank of gas. Tongue weight was right on at 1500lbs. So looking at Chevy or GMC 3500 with a diesel they can only tow at the hitch 12000lbs WTF. The Dodge 3500 can tow 15900lbs!
So I’m willing to guess that anyone that tow’s a boat over 35’ with a 3500 1Ton Crew Cab dually is not legal…..this is BS. Anyone with a 3500 knows what the truck is capable off and I think GM is just playing games with the numbers. So I guess everyone needs to go to the 4500 series….oh but they can only tow at the hitch 16000lbs. So that means we need to go to the 5500 series and pay commercial rate insurance. Below is my weight ticket.

good thread...

I think this is a wake-up-call for many of us towing our rigs.

To loose some weight, I may have to tell the wife that alluminum big blocks and ripping out the cabin are needed before next boating season to help reduce the weight...(hummm new big blocks or a new truck... )

REMEMBER, safety 1st!

You may not have perfect numbers though. The only way to get true tongue weight (at an industrial truck scale) is to pull off the scale with the entire tow vehicle; have the rear wheels of the truck JUST off the scale, and all of the trailer wheels on the scale.
Weight it.
Then, back up a couple feet, drop the tongue jack, disconnect the truck completely from the trailer, and pull the truck off the scale.
Weigh it.
Subtract the difference.
