Larger trailer tires seem hard to come by and expensive. Wouldnt a good 10 ply truck tire be better than a cheap trailer tire for 1/2 the price?

Absolutely. The Firestone Trans Force (LT) is an excellent trailer tire. I just started switching to them, per recommendation of friends that have been running them for years. I run an E/10 ply 16" tire.

You'll typically get more miles out of the trailer tires, since the tread pattern is a little less aggressive.

Although, most people's trailers sit more than they roll and the tires will usually dry-rot before they wear out.

7.50 - 16 LT highway rib tread works well and pulls easily. They are 31" tall. These are on 5200 lb axles.

One of my trailers has GoodYears, and they're okay sort of. The other used trailer has no-name ribs, and they have been awesome! Don't leak, wear great, wish I could get more of them.

i am told "ST" badge is special trailer and has a stiff sidewall to take the harsh turns' jack knife. i carry 2 spares/2jacks and AAA.

For smaller tires you are right. But ST's are not offered for 16" wheels, which the heavier axles generally use.

2 spares/2jacks and AAA does sound smart. Do you have trailer service through AAA?

I have AAA as well. They have an "RV+" membership which will service any trailer that you are towing as well. If you break down, they send 2 (tow) trucks and you get free towing for 100 miles.

Good info Brian- I have BP/Amoco motorclub and have gotten screwed with a trailer in tow after a breakdown. Might be time for a change....
