7.3 Transmission -
I've got a 99 F350 crew cab dually, 4x4, 7.3, 4:10 gears, Superchips chip, and approx 180k on the odometer. Well, this weekend I think my transmission died, or is really close. I was towing a cruiser (friends dads boat), and coasted down a pretty long hill. Got to the bottom of the hill, and hit the gas - nothing but RPM's. I pulled over and let it cool down a little while. When I took off, I had 1st and 2nd, but no 3rd or OD. I was limping to the nearest exit, when it started shifting fine. Made it to the lake with no other problems. I pulled the empty trailer back here today. When I got home, I pulled the transmission dipstick - fluid smells torched. The Ford dealer just did a "powerflush.." about 2000 miles ago.
I haven't had real good luck with transmission shops in the past - any recommendations?

My 99 F350PSD CC 4x4 tranny went 183k, so your right on schedule in my book...did exactly the same thing too, 1st & 2nd only...no3 OD or reverse...
Good Luck...If you buy a Ford rebuilt make sure they don't know about the chip or their 3/36 warranty is no good. I found out the hard way. spent $3k for theirs and 6 months later had it rebuilt by a tranny spec. for $2,100...

everyone over at dieselstop.com swears by BTS transmissions- you can do a search on that site for their #. I believe they are not too far from you. They specialize in bulletproofing 7.3 trannies.

I know of two trucks that went around the same time. They had them rebuilt and they blew. Went to ford got one of theirs and so far are trouble free. I have heard good things about BTS, not sure of the cost though. Also 140,000 is a long time so if the BTS is a lot more than the ford i would go with the ford one. Also not sure if you really need a built tranny. the stock one seemed to last a good while.
But STAY AWAY FROM THE TRANNY SHOPS. Either get a BTS or a Ford.
