Axle gear ratio upgrade for my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
About 2 months ago, I was at my Dodge dealer looking at a Ram 2500. But the salesman said they had one Brand New Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 left...and it was a little bit more than half off the sticker price. Still cant figure out why they could sell it so cheap up to today. So I bought it...
downside it...it came standard with 3.55 axle ratio and the towing rated capacity is only 7500 lbs, i think on mine is +another 500-1000 lbs because I have the smaller 17's on it.
The thing tows my 211 Liberator fine...but can I still upgrade aftermarket or from the dealer to 4.10's or 4.56's like the Power Wagon? I know that the Power Wagon with the same power train of my 1500 (5.7L Hemi 345hP) will tow 11000 lbs. Around how much would it be for the upgrade? What pros/cons would a higher axle ratio have besides increased towing?

My dodge shop truck I leased back in 99 had 3.55 gears,I thought it would get decent mileage empty and just tow things in 3rd gear. It struggled to pull o/d empty if the wind was blowing, took 30 seconds to hit 60 mph with my 272 baja behind it and went about 100 miles on 20 gallons of gas towing anything. I re-geared it to 4.11's,took the load range b 265's off,put load range e 245's on and it was night and day different. The mileage jumped from 4-5 towing to 8.5-10,the mileage empty jumped from 9 to 12 and it was no longer struggling to go down the road. The new trucks like your have come along ways,I would go 4.11's with the large factory tires,I'd only consider 4.56's if your putting BIG tires on,Smitty
