Excursion market

an Ex with aftermaket springs or ones from an f250 or f350, is a totally different riding vehicle, much more firmer, stable.
i would choose that ride over stock for towing/everyday driving

I have had a couple of Excursions after a couple of 3/4 ton Suburbans. Your Suburban with the 8.1 is still one of my favorites. Almost feels like a sportscar in comparison because the Excursion is wider/longer, but for highway towing I prefer the Excursion for those same attributes.
Absolutely love our current truck. 2002 V10 Black Limited with quad captain chairs (makes 3rd row much more accessible) and all the options. Towing our Intrepid which is roughly all-in 7,500LBS (had it weighed at a Certified Scales) we get about 8.5MPG. Unloaded anywhere from 12-14MPG. I agree on the market. It is absolutely all over the board in terms of price points.
You have probably seen these already, but just in case:

I know Will loves his '03/6.0L, but it's the only one I would stay away from.
IMHO, go with the 7.3L and let the leaf spring front suspension be good enough for you; or step directly into a 2005 with the coil springs and 6.0L.

You might try Wholesale inc in Madison or Goodletsville, Tn. They sell wholesale to everyone. The price you pay is the same as the dealer pays. Looked at an '05 Ex and it went for $32k. The next day the dealer up the road had it for $36k.
ANyway, they might be willing to look for a particluar vehicle for you. . They can direct you to their website.
Ask for Mr. Ferguson. He's one of the owners and I went to church with his parents.
This may help get you started.
