Here we go again- Which Ford PSD- 6.0 or 6.4?
Good Evening All,
I've been looking for a used F250/350 diesel that will be used to pull the boat (around 10k lbs) and occasionally heavier loads but probably not more than 12k lbs. Have spent several hours reading posts comparing the 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4's and it seems they all have potential issues..
Found two trucks that I am considering- one is a 2007 F350 Lariat 4x4 DRW with 60k miles and spotless for $24k, other one is 2008 F250 King Ranch 4x4, SRW with 50k miles for $29k. I don't need DRW's but the 6.0 sounds like a plus on the 2007, the King Ranch package is a plus and the 2008 interiors are nicer but it sounds like the 6.4's need more attention. Do you guys have any other positives or negatives that should enter into the 2007 vs 2008 or F250 vs F350 decision.
Thanks in advance,
Rick

I've got an 07 DRW Lariat 4x4 4 door with the 6.0. I bought it new and just hit 14K miles....only issue is from sitting, the blades in the turbo were sticking and just had the dealer clean it up in there. Apparently it will rust in there if used sporadically and cause them to stick. I was told to drive it 45 min once a week and it shouldn't do it again.

6.0L & 6.4L are so close akin that they should be seen in the same light. The 7.3L has issues that are not at all like the two mentioned first.
If any of the common 6.0L/6.4L problems arise requiring the cab to be pulled for engine repairs you better have about $7K lying around to handle the bill and hope it doesn't happen more than once.
A new 6.7L would be less risk than a used 6.0L/6.4L and the same goes for a 7.3L if you just gotta have a Ford.
Good luck

A f350 is a little overkill for 10000lbs. But if you get it prices right. IMO the 350 in general is stupid because if you have to tow that much weight your better off with the 450 and if you dont need that much weight save the money and get a 250. With that said I have a 6.4 2008 and it runs great. The 6.0 had a spotty history specially between 03-05. I did have a an 2007 with the 6.0 too and it ran fine. 2008 and newer will probably get a little less mileage due to the DPF install. You could go new but that engine is new and untested and will set you back at elast 50 grand. I like to buy used diesels that have at least three years of powertrain warranty left on them that way I dont have to worry about anything for a while.

personally go with the 08. Almost same price with the 08 your getting less miles and still have some warranty. Also between 07-08 was monumental leap in the interior. The 07 had the same junk that was in Fords back in 98-99. Trust me I had both

6.0 has had less warranty issues than the 6.4. If you have $4800 to bulletproof a 6.0 they are extremely solid machines. I have 140k on my 05 6.0 and have had no major engine issues. I replaced one turbo, one egr valve, and had the front end completely redone. Other than that she is running solid. Just stay away from chips if you don't put head gaskets and studs in it. I have yet to stud mine because there has been no issues with the HG yet. Buy you a edge insight and you can monitor eot and egt and avoid 90% of the issues before they happen

A Master Diesel tech told me not to buy a 6.4l even if it was free. Theres a reason they only had it out 2 years.
Plus they get horrible gas mileage.

My friend works for a large crane company with a bunch of 6.4 service trucks. He says that almost all of them have had some kind of radiator or inter-cooler failure. Most of them out of warranty and a cost of $1500-1800.
A few of them got so much coolant in the block that the motors were ruined.

they are better than the 6.0. And the only reason they were out for three years 2008,2009, 2010 was that Powerstrokes were actually made by international and Ford got into a dispute with them and decided to build their own engine in 2011. As for gas mileage they are all like that regadless of brand after 2008 because of the mandated DPF filter. Now ford says they have better gas mileage now but thats because they are using urea(spelling) to clean the DPF which has to be filled every 2-5000miles at 50 bucks or so per tank.
