99.5 7.3 already had the compressor wheel update to cure loud noise, but the early wheel does not surge in the 16-20 psi range. Late 2000-2001 they changed the number 8 injector to eliminate noise caused by air in the return less fuel system, 99 and 2000 had forged rods 01-03 had powdered metal of a weaker design. If you have a 6.0 keep 10,000 on hand at all times. Not if but when the headgaskets, egr cooler, ficm, hipop, injectors, front crank seal will fail and leave you stranded

You can distinguish an early 99 from a late by the v8 powerstroke emblem on the front fender instead of on the door like the others, a late 99 has red on the emblem all others just chrome letters on a black emblem

2000 7.3 is was the best engine with the strongest bottom end, 2001 and up they were using a weaker connecting rod in the engine..

i would take a 2002 cummins over any of them to be honest with you,,the old ladys dad has one with 500k on it and nothing but oil changes and one clutch..
