Yes insurace can be a PITA. All the companies I called for quotes will only do them as a comercial vehicle with very high rates. Some won't do them at all. Progressive is the only one I found that will do them as a pickup truck. It's still in their commercial department but they will insure them as a pickup with rates just slightly higher than my F350.

A member here on OSO told me in VA, it cost him over $8K a year JUST TO OWN AND PARK IT IN THE GARAGE.
Commercial Truck tags via Virginia DMV: $$
Commercial Truck insurance; even though he could run it through his business: $$
Does not qualify for Personal Property Tax relief, so the county was legally able to gouge him as well: $$
In a little over two years of NOT owning it, recovered OpEx allowed him to pay off the F-350 dually he replaced it with; and he put the CapEx back into the boat fund.

One might look into Montana registration for such a vehicle.

I guess OK is not to bad- Mine is under $750 yr for Ins. Personal. Through Progressive Safeco
I could have put it under company but did NOT want to have to do CDL.

mine is insured thru state farm for $60,000 with $7000 for music and tv for around $350 for 6 months then in storage for about $75 so for about $425 its insured personal vehicle ,anybody can drive , state value . once you tow with a 650 your hooked and fun to run around town.

Cleveland is cold right now, no snow so i cant go snowmobiling. I boat out of mentor. The flats has shut dow mostly. The hood moved in and no one wanted to go there because of crime any more.
141 days, 20 hours, 51 minutes , and 35 seconds until the boat goes back in the water. But who's counting.

+1, I say go for it!! Once you pull with the 650's or kodiaks you will never go back to your standard ole pick up truck. Completely night and day any way you compare it. There ability to maintain control in a hairy situations along with making a statement where ever you go cant be beat. Pull the trigger, you wont regret it.
