I have always wondered what the max tranny temp should reach on a 6L80? 240?

I have asked around; some say 220 next one say 240 since it has Dexron VI. And the next ass hole says 250..

Dose any one have a solid answer. "Like up to 225 it is ok, 230 start taking it real easy. 240 pull over and stop. 250 start looking for a new tranny..."

When I start to see 220-225 I really start to drive like a grandma.

These newer transmissions (and fluids) are designed to work all the way to 260. That said at 230 I would pull over. You need a bigger cooler if you are seeing temps above 220. These are easy to have plumbed in by a GOOD trans shop. I talked to company that design and builds custom radiators and coolers, one of their ENGINEERS. Can't remember there name. Dexron VI is the latest and greatest. Don't change to one of the aftermarket fluids (Redline, Royal purple etc) BTW. OEM is best, or whoever makes it for them.

I would be looking at upgrading the trans cooler, IMO.

I have never seen over 180 ish while towing with my Sierra Denali.

Upshifting and downshifting causes heat. Are you towing with cruise control?

Transmissions do not last long over 210-220.

When does it get this hot?

Yeah like Wannabe said. Why change to fluid far superior than OEM that can possibly drop your temps nearly 30degrees?! Who would want that? I mean, I'm sure the manufacturers(OEMs) are looking out for consumers best interest, right? You've got to be kidding me. OEM's bid their products out to whomever will make it cheapest and meet minimum spec. Remember the old saying, if you want cheap, its not going to be good, and if you want good, its not going to be cheap. Personally, I use Amsoil ATF, have put nearly 1.6 million miles between 4 Ford Excursions, and the transmissions have never been apart. Just fluid changes every 75-100k miles.

I'm pretty sure my Cadillac states Mobil 1 on the cap from the OEM. I Didn't know it was the cheapest oil on the market...

No. Mobil is definitely a solid product. But its not a GM branded product, which is what I think he was referring to.

I installed a Mag Hytec trans pan on my F350 Dually. It added quite a bit of extra fluid. The highest I have seen while towing was 174.

I have the same brand pan on the rear end also, nice stuff.

Those charts are from a long time ago. The newest Dexron 6 is designed to still work all the way to 260 as the trannys are. True you are losing a little clutch plate life, and runing at 210 is preferable.

Remember new engines run at 200 f and trans cooler lines go through the radiators.
