Opinions on a 2008 4wd Duramax with 327,000 miles?

as a guy who is currently in the market for a new or used Duramax, trust me when I say, the used prices are very over inflated right now. This is due to lack of inventory both new AND used. My current 2008 Duramax has 110K miles on it and I'm amazed at the trade-in value. However, Chevy just yesterday released more cash incentives on remaining 2016 trucks in stock. Like almost $5K off. Now the challenge is to find a truck! The used trucks that I have found are actually priced higher than I can get a brand new one for. Regarding the truck you're looking at with 327K miles, go over it with a fine toothed comb and if it checks out OK, low ball the guy and see what happens. Like I said, mine only has 110K on it but I have never had a single issue with my D-Max. Glow plugs are the only thing I ever replaced.

I had two pipelines come through my property in the last couple of years. Some of those trucks had massive miles on them not to mention idle time. They told me that the dmax engine was good for 500k miles easy with maint and were outlasting the newer Dodges. Did not see many older Fords. Highest mileage DMax I saw one out there with 406k on a 2008/2009
My lbz just turned 250k, I have had a water pump, 3 glow plugs, a water leak at the oil cooler, alternator, 2 sets of hydroboost hoses, shocks, neutral safety switch. Original brakes still, plan on keeping it for at least another 100k and spending the money on a bus.

You are right, they are getting more and more expensive. And more and more expensive to repair. My 08 F450 6.4 blew the motor at 97K miles. Hard to swallow $14K for a new motor from Ford. Put in a new motor from Jasper plus all the delete stuff and it was right around $20K. Poor engineering. I though that Ford had fixed the issues after the 6.0 debacle, but was wrong. Expensive lesson. I would guess they all have their issues, but damn they are expensive when they go bad.

The neutral safety switch was the weirdest failure. On cold morning transs would go into limp mode and not shift out of 1st or second or even put transfer case in neutral. As soon as I built heat it was all good. It's inside the tranny, I was able to get a gm tech to do it for a couple hundred cash. Transmission shop wanted to do a complete rebuild, that was a 130k miles ago.

At the time there was very little/no info out there on the diesel forums about that rare problem, if I needed to get up and go on a cold morning I would heat the tranny with a forced air kerosene heater while the truck idled.

A word of advice regarding all of the newer diesels. Get educated! Read the forums and read the literature on the aftermarket tuners/suppliers websites. We are in an age of computer controlled chaos and complicated engineering and quite honestly, many of the dealers can't even figure out issues on the newer vehicles. It's not like it used to be, all diesels used to run for ever but, its just not like that anymore. I personally would not buy a late model high mileage diesel unless it was cheap or had a meticulous maintenance record. You have to protect yourself and bank account in case of failure. Injectors cost thousands, CP3/CP4 pumps cost over a thousand, the labor to replace items like these is also thousands. It is very true that the diesel market is inflated right now. People are asking for big money for junk. But that's not to say that you can'y buy a good used diesel, you just need to know what to look for and to get it for the right price.
That's my rant and advice, and with that being said, my daily driver is a brand new diesel
