I would look for the Caddy with the 6.2. I had one and it towed great. I have found that they are usually cheaper than a similar Tahoe, Yukon, Denali as well. Not sure why, but they just don't seem to hold their value as well as the others. Fuel mileage is not that bad.

I love the 2500 suburbans and Yukon XL’s. I own an ‘06 2500 suburban with the 8.1litre. Have 212,000 miles on it, bought her with 24,000 miles on it. Been a great truck/suv. Still burns same amount of oil as it did day one, about a quart, quart half per oil change. Gets 10 1/2mpg. Has 3.73 gears. That is the last year GM offered the big block. Can find early ‘07’s with big block but good luck.

This is actually the second 2500 suburban I’ve owned. Previous was an ‘02 with 8.1. Had 4.10 gears. It ran and pulled better. About same mileage.

The 2500 6.0 suburban is easier to find than the 8.1. They will be more expensive than half tons.

I have also heard great things about the new half ton duramax.

Default Range Rover

Not sure what your budget is, but Range Rovers tow great with the 510 hp supercharged V8, are cheap used because people are scared, and your wife will love it.

I mainly tow with bigger diesels but have had luck with my sons Ram 1500 that has the 3.0L eco diesel and it is great on fuel economy

Surprisingly the Audi Q7, VW Touareg, and even the Porsche Cayenne up until 2016/2017 WITH the TDI/diesel engines are great tow vehicles. My exGF towed with one, and I have several race car friends that tow with them currently.

Depending on configuration, they can have up to 7700 lbs. towing capacity. If towing anything over 3000 lbs. though, just make sure you have a full Electric or EoH brake system for the trailer.

I currently have a 2014 F150 6.2L and Lexus sedan for DD duties. I use the F150 for light/local towing.
I am casually always looking for the right aforementioned TDI SUV, to downsize my paddock--drop two vehicles down to one overall.

You could always shorten a pickup by up to 6 inches by removing the rear bumper and going with a roll pan or perhaps a custom tucked tubular bumper as well.

Simple to have a custom fab shop build one of these for a truck:

My tow vehicle and it's served me well for years. Abysmal mpg towing and averages 18mpg by itself but it runs like a clock with 230+k on the odometer.

My Yukon XL (2013) is geting up there in age and miles. It has served me well so I am looking at the newer Yukons and Suburbans. In addition to hauling the VR 1 I have Irish Wolfhounds that I haul to dog shows etc. There really isn't anything else that works as well for my purposes. Looking very hard at the newer models with the Duramax diesel although I haven't driven one yet. Does anyone have any experience with diesel Yukon XL?

Guys,

So I'm looking at a 2021 Chevy 1500 RST with a 420HP 6.2L and the Allison 10sp automatic. I really like the truck. Although I haven't actually towed with it, after a test drive, and with 35% more HP and torque ahead of the transmission, I can easily tell it will be, by orders of magnitude, a better towing vehicle than our Avalanche. After a test drive, I can tell you it's got LOTS of stank under the pedal. My only issue is the 10sp transmission. I hear both good and bad, and I wonder how much of either to believe. I've got a friend who just picked up a brand new 2024 2500 with the Allison 10sp, and he loves it. I've got another colleague with an F150 with (supposedly) the same transmission, and he's not happy with it, even though he's had it for a number of years and it has not failed in any way. The interwebs seem to be all over both sides. This one is three years old, with 26K miles on it. I've got the entire dealer service records for it, none of which are anything other than inspections, rotating tires and oil and air filter changes, specifically nothing transmission related. I drove it pretty hard during the test drive, and could not discern anything of any concern.

Anybody have any first hand experience with this transmission?

Thanks. Brad.
