Reckless, I used to have a 2001 F-150 with the 5.4 triton and it was a fight pulling the boat no matter what terrain I was traveling in. I got about 16 or 17 mpg on the highway unloaded and about 8 or 9 when I pulled the boat. I assure you once you go to a diesel you will NEVER go back. The power you have is unmatched. I also get much better mileage (13-14mpg) when towing the boat. If you want more info this is a great site to read about what to look for when buying a used 7.3.... http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31 It is basically like offshoreonly for F-250s. There have been a good deal of threads started on what year is the best to buy. Good luck and like I said, you won't be disappointed.

I have an '02 F250 extended cab long bed, flowmaster exhaust and a 80hp superchip.I love it.Tows my 28' PQ and 24' enclosed car trailer with ease.Running 80mph from College Station to NewOrleans(flat land) I got 17 mpg(not towing ofcourse).Changed oil,put air in the tires and fuel in the tank.Haven't done anything else to it.BOB

My 2000 excursion 4X4 has the V10 it has a 140k miles and the engine and trans have not been touched. Just fluid changes and plugs at 100k. 85% of the time is towing a one or two car trailer. V10's are greatly overlooked. I get 14 hwy and 11 towing. My friend has a deisel excursion we raced one time and I beat him pretty bad. Kinda hurt his ego, since he was always braging about how great his diesel was and how much of a pig my V10 was.

Well I just bought a 2000 F-250 XLT super-cab 4x4 with the 7.3L diesel engine from Ebay. After talking with the owner I feel i got an excellent deal on it and will fly up to Mahopac, NY to pick it up on Saturday. Very well maintained with all the records. Original owner that used synthetic oil in the engine. I'm pretty stoked, I got it for $4k under book value not counting the cap, bedliner, and front brush guard with flood lights he added. Plus he said it's never been off road nor has it ever towed anything. An older gent who said he bought it mainly to get around in the bad weather, and to drive out west to visit his son.....Now I have trailer and a bigger truck and now I'm ready to roll...
